WATERLOO OPTIMIZES ROAD INFRASTRUCTURE MAINTENANCE THROUGH PARTNERSHIP WITH FUGRO

Toronto, Canada, February 11, 2016 - The Regional Municipality of Waterloo has awarded Fugro Roadware a contract to collect updated images for its road right-of-way (ROW) inventory. The contract covers 1,400 lane kilometers of regional roads and provides a web-based solution for digital image playback and data review. Web-based data access maximizes the region’s budget by reducing time consuming and costly field visits and enabling the sharing of information with various groups within the Municipality such as Operations and Bylaw. Fugro’s Automated Road Analyzer (ARAN) system also collects the International Roughness Index (IRI) and wheel track rutting of the road, and assets such as guardrails, signs and road striping. This data can then be used in the future such as for updating inventories and condition assessments.

Fugro’s unique multi-functional asset data collection vehicle, the ARAN 9000, is equipped with cameras, profilers and lasers. It automatically collects specific asset and pavement data, including transverse profile and road roughness. Captured using forward and right facing high resolution cameras, ROW images have a wide field of view and are geo-referenced to allow the images to be used in GIS software such as ESRI’s ArcGIS.

Fugro’s iVision web-based application software gives Municipality staff a synchronized view of images and collected roadway data allowing for easy visual quality assessment of assets and pavement condition. Shawn Buckley, P.Eng., Senior Transportation Infrastructure Engineer for the Municipality, commented, “Fugro’s iVision tool allows us to drive a regional road directly from our desktop. Having the ability to access any point on the road network quickly and accurately is extremely convenient. iVision is a tool that our asset management staff use every day!” Data can be summarized in a graph, dashboard or tabulated form to help staff analyze asset trends year-over-year. As the Municipality was already an iVision user, transition to the latest version was seamless. Collaborating on projects since 2009, Fugro is familiar with the Municipality’s data collection needs and is committed to delivering quality data, software training and updates to them.

Fugro has provided pavement condition surveys for numerous transportation agencies in Canada including the Ontario Ministry of Transportation, Region of Peel (Ontario) and British Columbia Ministry of Transportation & Infrastructure, and the USA including the states of Louisiana, New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Virginia and West Virginia.

ABOUT FUGRO

Fugro creates value by acquiring and interpreting earth and engineering data and providing associated consulting services to support clients with their design and construction of infrastructure and buildings. Fugro also supports clients with the installation, repair and maintenance of their subsea infrastructure. Fugro is an independent service provider.

Fugro works around the globe, predominantly in energy and infrastructure markets offshore and onshore employing approximately 12,500 employees in over seventy countries. In 2014 Fugro’s revenue amounted to EUR 2.6 billion; Fugro is listed on Euronext Amsterdam.

ABOUT FUGRO ROADWARE

Fugro Roadware has over 45 years of highly specialized experience in infrastructure and pavement management technology and data collection services. Our mission is to provide transportation asset management systems, surveys and advice to maximize the impact of the maintenance and development decisions on the life and value of the asset while ensuring the safety of our employees and the safety of others.

ASI expands large-area LiDAR capabilities with purchase of Leica

ASI expands large-area LiDAR capabilities with purchase of Leica ALS70-HP Airborne LiDAR Sensor and RCD30 Camera

The addition of the flexible state-of-the-art LiDAR sensor and camera enables Aerial Services, Inc. (ASI) to more efficiently collect large areas while maintaining the highest degree of quality that the company has worked to achieve for nearly 50 years .

NORCROSS, GA, February 10, 2016 – Leica Geosystems Inc.[1] today announced that Aerial Services, Inc.[2] (ASI), a privately owned small business based in Cedar Falls, IA, has purchased a Leica ALS70-HP LiDAR sensor co-mounted with a four-band, 80 megapixel RCD30 imaging camera. ASI provides aerial acquisition, processing, orthophoto production, mapping and LiDAR services to government, utilities, engineers, and other geospatial clients.

“As the advances in LiDAR technology and applications continue to drive a rapid increase in market value, ASI has been committed to bringing those new capabilities to our clients,” said Mike Tully, the company’s CEO and president. “Beginning in 2012 with the purchase of a high-density corridor scanner, and now with the purchase of a Leica ALS70-HP and RCD30, ASI is positioned to be able to take on any project, large or small.”

The Leica ALS70-HP is designed for general purpose mapping at the most common flying heights and can accommodate greater terrain relief due to its higher maximum flying height. The flexible sensor solution enables ASI to expand on its current airborne LiDAR capabilities with a high altitude system while providing the opportunity to upgrade later on to the most current technology, the ALS80-HP, thus extending the life cycle of the firm’s investment. The Leica RCD30 is the only camera that is able to collect 80 MP RGBN multispectral imagery perfectly co-registered using a single camera head.

“We were looking for a LiDAR sensor that could meet the specifications of the 3DEP program and support our bids for statewide LiDAR projects,” Tully continued. “With Leica Geosystems’ combination of sensor and camera, we can fly higher and faster, while collecting the amount of data and accuracy we need to meet USGS Quality Levels 1 and 2. The system is also capable of high density corridor collection for additional capacity in that area. The four-band Leica RCD30 also complements our two Leica ADS80 pushbroom sensors.”

ASI serves clients with diverse needs, including agriculture and precision farming, infrastructure and construction management, natural resources and coastal conservation, aviation navigation and safety, geologic resource assessment, and forest resources management. The ALS70-HP and RCD30 add much-needed capabilities and flexibility to complete custom projects.

“Aerial surveying and photogrammetry is not something that just anybody can do well, and having the right equipment is key,” said Tully. “Also, with ASI's decades of experience and reputation for quality, clients can trust that their projects are flown and processed by the best.”

“I have enjoyed working with Aerial Services, Inc. since they became a Leica Geosystems customer in 2008, when they purchased the first of their two Leica ADS80 sensors,” said Shawn Slade, aerial mapping systems sales manager for Leica Geosystems NAFTA. “They have been a long and valued customer of Leica Geosystems, and I look forward to continuing my strong relationship with them as they expand and grow their LiDAR presence in the North American market.”

“Leica Geosystems designed the ALS70 LiDAR sensor and the RCD30 digital imaging camera to deliver excellent quality data for diverse applications,” said Jean Gardiner, vice president of the geospatial solutions division in North America for Hexagon Geosystems. “The high density point clouds and multispectral photogrammetric imagery address many needs of the airborne survey market.”

For more information about airborne sensor solutions, visit www.leica-geosystems.us[3].
