TIKAL: THE MAYA WORLD Map
The map has been published in History National Geographic Magazine Issue 2 .
WHEN THE MAYA civilization
reached its height in
the Late Classic period,
between the sixth and
eighth centuries a.d., the Maya lowlands
were filled with cities. This sophisticated
urban world, linked by a network of roads
known as sacbeob, was made possible by
the work of the peasants, who made up the
majority of an ever growing population; It
is believed that the population density in
the area around Tikal may have reached
400-500 inhabitants per square mile.
